In August, when we were in Maryland and North Carolina, these black-and-yellow garden spiders (Argiope aurantia) seemed to be everywhere. But this tarantula-sized one was by far the largest. In retrospect I should have put my hand next to it for some perspective.

Aaron, the last time I saw a tarantula was on my Uncle Less’s ranch in Oklahoma when I was a kid. I encountered him on the path I was walking, and he scared me so much that I turned and ran as fast I could back to the ranch house! Even now, I do not know whether he/she was poisonous, and I did not want to find out. I was just overwhelmed to see a spider of that size. Of cours, I have no idea what specie it was, and probably it was different from the one pictured here. But thanks for capturing this critter for your photo collection; I am delighted to get to view him (without fear) up close.–Dad
