In this shot you can see a small portion of this hummingbird’s long tongue. Humminbirds don’t “suck” the nectar out of flowers, they lick it at a rate of about 13 licks per second. It’s interesting to think that someone had to come up with an experiment to measure hummingbird licking speed.

According to the book I read, a hummingbird’s wings top out at about 78 beats per second. This 1/80 second exposure is just about just about the right length to capture one full cycle.
